TRANSMISSION:Oral: By the food or the drinking water.
Aerial: By inhalation of the dust.
Ovarian: Of the ovary to the egg.
SYMPTOMS: 4 forms
1 - Intestinal: diarrea with thick lees surrounded by snots, elements nondigested in dirty water of brown or green, and frothy color. Thickening of the sewer.
Thinning.
2 - Articulte: of the internal goes to the blood and from there to the joints of greater movement (elbow). Fallen wing
3 - Organic: it attacks all the devices pronouncing itself with a short breath and general weakening.
4 - Nervous: it attacks the brain and the spinal marrow producing:
- loss of balance
- paralysis
- tortícolis (similar to New Castle)
DIAGNOSE Serologic, wich means the antibodies of the blood of the infected animals.

MICOPLASMOSIS
Microplasma - Microorganism halfway between a bacterium and a virus. Cured pigeons acquire immunity, however they happen to be carrying and transmitting the illness to the youngsters. This disease generally is associate to the ORNITOSIS.
Many pigeons are carrying and the diseases appear after the effort of a difficult competition.
CAUSAL AGENT:Microplasma
SYMPTOMS:Nasal, watery humid secretion and becomes sticky and mucous. Inside the mouth a gray, rough scab.
Tongue and sticky palate. Very disagreeable breath (repulsive). Nose of dirty gray color. Very difficult breathing.
Very strong noises at night. Very slow evolution. It is rare to have an generalised infection but when happens the diminishing of the defences (stress, the races, lack of hygiene, overpopulation etc.) can cause deaths.
DIAGNOSE:Serológic examination of the antibodies of the attacked pigeons.
TREATMENT:Tilosina (Tylla MR) ENROFLOXACINA. Administer it to 5 days consecutive
PROPHYLAXIS:Deep disinfection. Preventive treatments can be done in the weeks frees of races, and mainly after a hard one.

COCCIDIOSIS
CAUSAL AGENT:A tiny parasite. Two species:
Eimeria Labbeana
Eimeria Columbarum
SYMPTOMS:Two forms:
Clinical: proper of the adult pigeon. There is no symptom but it diminishes the sport perfomance. There is a certain immunity.
Itself: It attacks young pigeons at the third week of age. Watery and faded faecal material, sometimes with blood (never liquid and green). Loss of weight and forms. Loss of color of the rainbow of the eye, changes grayish. Mucous of the mouth and the throat becomes pale (anemia). Opaque plumage.
DIAGNOSE:Analysis of faecal material.
TREATMENT:Sulfamidas "the continued use in the eye, causes damages at renal level"
Amprolium
Cloazuril
Toltazuril (Baycox Mr.)
PROPHYLAXIS:Alternate the above-mentioned drugs every 30 days in a preventive form. Possibility to use this treatment together with the one against trichomonas. Once finished the treatment, give vitamins during 3-4 days. Deep cleaning and general disinfection (do not forget that the eggs of coccidios reproduce in the accumulated faecal matter in the floor or trays being necessary three conditions: temperature, humidity and oxygen. Therefore we must prevent the humidity).

manny guerrero

ASCARIDIOSIS
CAUSAL AGENT:Ascaris Columbae.
The cycle where the egg of the parasite is eliminated by the faecal matter, goes to the ground, is developed the larva and again it is ingested, matured and again eliminated it is of 20 days for that reason it recommends the preventive treatment every 21 days)
SYMPTOMS:Few roundworms cause little damage, but if the number increases too much it produces a reduction of the sports perfomance and inflict many casualties.
- Anorexy (loss of appetite)
- Loss of weight.
- Weakness
- Little consistent faecal material.
- Intense thirst.
- Anemia
- Opaque and made bristle plumage.
- we can see the parasites in the excrements and sometimes in vomits. The damages caused by these parasites are imputed to 3 reasons.
1 - The wounds that cause in intestinal wall
2 - Because they absorb many elements nutritious.
3 - Because they excrete toxic substances.
DIAGNOSE:Analysis of fecal material
TREATMENT:There are different drugs:
- Levamisol -RIPERCOL MR
- Piperazina
- Ivermectina (Ivomec Mr)
PROPHYLAXIS:Alternate the treatment with the above-mentioned drugs every 30 days. In this way we diminished the possibility of dependence to the drug. Do not forget that the LEVAMISOL is an excellent inmunomodulator as well (stimulating of the defences) therefore its use is essential whenever we vaccinate against New Castle.
The old animals develop a certain immunity.
Cleaning - hygiene. Disinfection

CAPILARIOSIS
CAUSAL AGENT:Capillaria obsignata
Is considered that this parasite is present in 50 % of the pigeons, but particularly is more sensible in the young animals.
SYMPTOMS:A slight infection practically does not produce symptoms, only diminution in the sport perfomance. But if the infection is serious, youngsters can die one week after starting the disease.
DIARREA ----> THINNING -----> DEATH
DIAGNOSE:Idem ascaridiosis.
TREATMENT:Idem ascaridiosis. (NO PIPERAZINA)
PROPHYLAXIS:Idem ascaridiosis

TRICHOMONIASIS
CAUSAL AGENT:Trichomona Columbae (a protozoário)
We considered that 80% of the old pigeons are carrying, being able to happen inadvertent. It is used to say that the oldiers live in balance with trichomonas in ominous consequences. In the youngsters is fatal.
SYMPTOMS:- Apathy
- Spiny plumage.
- Viscous diarrea ---> thinning.
- Intense thirst
- Anorexy (lack of appetite)
- Disnea (difficult breading: penguin position)
- white and yellow spots in the mouth and throat.

SYMPTOMS:- Apathy
- Fever it raises and low)
- Anemia (of there the eye and the white mucous)
-general
Weakness
- Death in the youngsters.
After this acute phase, where the symptoms are evident, the plasmodiosis enters a period of diminution of their clinical manifestations and parasitemia to endoglobular arriving at a stage of normality between the 30 - 40 days of begun the symptoms.
DIAGNOSE:Examination of the blood (method of Giemsa).
TREATMENT:Plasmodicidas used in the human malaria:

The intermediary host is the pigeon. It is necessary that the infested fly resentment the pigeon to developed this disease .
SYMPTOMS:Seen only in the summer months . The symptoms are very similar to those of the plasmodiosis, so its possible a confusion (due to time and symptoms).
The flies that suck infected blood are able to transmit the haemoproteosis 15 days late and between 25 to 30 days later begin the symptoms:
- Recurrent fever (it raises and low) 43 º C

LICE, ACARUSES, DIPTEROS (flies), CARRAÇAS.
With respect to the subject I am not going to extend, I will only say that lice, mites, flies and garrapatas (a kind of aracnideos) exists in the pigeons and that cause damages in the plumage, sometimes quite seriously. The best way to fight them is with an aspersion bath but never with an immersion one. It is also necessary to consider to not use products derived from the piretrins (by: kaotrina) because is toxic for the birds, and although poisoning symptoms are not pronounced can cause low perfomance in the races.
CARBARIL 5 % (in powder)
NEVER USE GAMEXANE

DEFICIENCY AND METABOLIC DISEASES
Within this group of infections I have included the ones which produced by deficiencies

(of vitamins, minerals salts or amino acids) and tumors.

VITAMINS AND THEIR DEFICIENCIES

It is practically impossible to produce a hipervitaminosis or overdose of vitamins. All the ingested excess, the animal the metabolises and eliminates it.

DEFINITION:

The existing vitamins are organic substances in foods, incapable to be synthesized by the organism in adequate quantities being used in small doses, for the normal functioning and maintenance of the organism and health.

According to this definition, vitamins must be supplied periodically in order to prevent upheavals.
VITAMINS:

VITAMIN B12 Or CIANOCOBALAMINE:
Action:It is the so called antianemic vitamin. Along with Copper and the Cobalto, are indispensable in the formation of the elements of the blood (eritropoyesis)
Deficiency:Delay in the growth
Anaemia
Upheavals in the moulting
Low in the fertility of eggs. It is important to say that all the vitamins of group B are less stable than the others (they oxidize quickly) for that reason must be used in amounts that are daily consumed and not to leave them in the water throughs until the other day.
It is also important to know that the vitamins of group B, act to each other interrelated, therefore the deficiency of one of them means that we must provide the called " B Complex ".

MINERAL SALTS

DEFINITION:

Indispensable substances for many processes of the animal organism. In the nature they are under different salts form. It is important to say that when we provide mineral complexes to the birds these regulate their ingestion according to their necessities.

Next some of the most important minerals and its main action within the organism of the birds:

SODIUM (Na)

It acts in the absorption of the water and its later elimination (diuresis)

CALCIUM (Ca) and PHOSFORO (P)

Are fundamental along with vitamin D in the formation of the bones

POTASSIUM (K)

Acts in the operation of the cardiac muscle (cardiac tone)

Also acts on the diuresis.

MAGNESIUM (Mg)

It is related intimately with Ca and P.

IODINE (I)

Is fundamental for the normal operation of the gland thyroid.

MANGANESE (MN)

Necessary for the growth and the reproduction. Its deficiency as we saw before causes PEROSIS (http://planeta.clix.pt/cf_homepage/diseases.htm#PEROSIS)

COPPER (Cu) and COBALT (Co)

Are fundamental together with the B12 vitamin, in the eritorpoyesis (this means formation of the elements of the blood: globules)

IRON (Fe)

Essential component and the hemoglobina of the blood.

AMINO ACIDS

DEFINITION:

They are substances that the animal organism synthesizes from ingested nitrogen, being these the base of the formation of proteins. (a protein is a chain of amino acids).
The essential amino acids are those that the organism does not synthesize in suitable amounts to maintain the growth or the normal nutrition, so they must appear in the diet that we give our birds.

Next I detail to the 10 essential amino acids and their requirements by pigeon and day:

(necessities per day and pigeon)

Pox

Causes and Clinical Signs
Pigeon pox is caused by a virus infecting the bare skin around the eyes, on the beak, on the feet and internally within the mouth and throat area. On occasions infection of a wound on a feathered area of the body can occur.
The lesions are typically scabby in appearance with pus often being present due to secondary bacterial infection.
The internal form can be so severe that feeding and breathing are affected to the point that death occurs. Lesions typically occur 4 to 14 days after initial infection and may be present for several weeks.

Diagnosis
This is based on the clinical signs – the internal form affecting the mouth and throat may need a laboratory diagnosis to confirm this condition.
The disease needs to be differentiated from canker with which the mouth form could easily be confused, and from Candida infection caused by a fungal infection of the mouth.
Treatment
As with paramyxo this condition is due to a virus and no specific treatment is available. Antibiotics may be used under veterinary direction to combat secondary infections and multi vitamins may be of benefit in some birds during the recovery phase.

Prevention
As no specific treatment is available the prevention of the disease by vaccination is very important.
All birds over six weeks old should be vaccinated and vaccination should be done in all birds at the same time. Annual re-vaccination should be done between the 30th September and the 31st December each year. If birds are vaccinated at any other time of the year it is important that they are withheld from racing for a period of six weeks after vaccination.
Vaccination of young birds in Spring would be advised in lofts where pigeon pox is endemic.
The pox virus is very resistant and will remain infective for many months. It can be transmitted by biting flies and other insects. As a result good loft hygiene is important in the control of the disease.

Apple Cider Vinegar
Dr. Zsoft Talaber
Edited by Degrave Martin
Real apple cider vinegar is a natural substance, but only if from a bio farm. It strengthens the immune system, as it is an excellent source of trace and micro elements. However, this is only true of vinegar derived from apples grown in a natural (e.g. grassy) environment free of fertilizers and insecticides. An apple that is artificially cultivated does not undergo real ripening, and so does not contain the biologically complete stock of micro elements of which it is genetically capable. Apple cider vinegar is an ideal source of organic acid. Organic acids help digestion and the breaking down of food intake, and thus prevent the development of illnesses caused by undigested food.
It is widely known that acidity prevents the spread of coli bacteria and salmonellas. These pathogens like a gently alkaline environment in which they can really start to proliferate. Apple cider vinegar mixed in water prevents salmonella from spreading in the waterier. Its acidic effect continues to restrict pathogens, even in the pigeon’s intestines. What is less well-known is that apple cider vinegar can be life-saving. Many have found that in hot weather pigeons’ rate of breathing can increase, dramatically if it is very hot, and pigeons breathe rapidly with their beaks open. On such occasions the increased exchange of air causes more carbon dioxide to leave the blood than normal.
This leads to acid deficiency, and so the blood becomes increasingly alkaline (breathing alkalosis). Initially this process generates bad disposition, dizziness, then nausea, and, if it becomes more extreme, death. In hot weather we pine for soft drinks with lemon and carbon dioxide in order to compensate for the acid deficiency. If at such times we give our pigeons water with apple cider vinegar, we can save their lives. In prolonged heat we can achieve even more with a little apple cider vinegar than this. For in addition to the changing pH of the blood, potentially fatal processes are taking place in the digestive system. Heat is a powerful stressor, but is bad for digestion in and of itself, as the vessels in the skin, lungs, etc. expand, while the vessels supplying the digestive system contract. Thus in hot weather consumption of food declines, meaning that good intestinal bacteria do not have adequate nutrition, and so the acid they produce also decreases. Meanwhile, as we have seen, the alkalinity of the blood grows, which is life-threatening. Simply put, the body attempts to compensate for this by taking acid away from the digestive system, further increasing its alkalinity. As the heat stress has already reduced the resistance of the digestive system, all these factors mean that conditions are ideal for the fast proliferation of salmonellas lurking in the intestines. Thus in hot weather there is every chance that a paratyphoid epidemic will flare up. In most cases, all this can be prevented by a simple acidification of drinking water with apple cider vinegar
Like anything else, apple cider vinegar can be overdosed. In too great a quantity it can even damage good intestinal bacteria. The high quantity of acid absorbs calcium (lime) and removes it from the system, which results in motor and reproductive problems. So overdoses of apple vinegar should be avoided. The dose for 5% apple cider vinegar is 4-8ml per liter of drinking water, 1-3 times a week. If we administer it more regularly, e.g. in prolonged hot weather, we should choose a lower level of concentration. In addition, we can use apple cider vinegar for the disinfection of objects, e.g. waterers, or more precisely for the subsequent acidification of a sterilized set of trays. This prevents the spread of salmonellas in the outside world. We should use it for this purpose to wash the floor of the loft, observing caution, especially in enclosed spaces, because acidic gases in the air can reach dangerous concentrations

What is Trichomoniasis?

Trichomoniasis is a protozoan parasite of the digestive tract and has been endemic in pigeons in the UK for some time. The disease is also known as 'Pigeon canker'. This reflects the fact that pigeons and doves appear the most susceptible to this disease and are the main carriers.
It is the greatest killer and crippler of the pigeon diseases. Young birds appear more susceptible than adults.
Other species of birds, including other garden birds, game birds and raptors may also be affected. Trichomoniasis is bird specific, and does not pass on to mammals, including humans.

Cause It is spread by contacts between pigeons, such as billing, mating and feeding young. The organism will live for some time in water or in damp locations,
The infection is also thought to be spread via food or drinking water freshly contaminated with saliva or (possibly) droppings from an infected bird

Cure All forms of canker can be treated if found early. Many different types of medicine are available for curing canker. Spartrix, Chevi Coli.

What are the signs of trichomoniasis?
A swelling in throat and cheesy growth in the mouth are certain signs of canker.

Mouth open
Drooling and repeated swallowing movements.
Loss of condition
Watery eyes in some birds
Nervous symptoms (rare)
Post-mortem lesions: yellow plaques and raised cheesy masses in mouth, pharynx, oesophagus, crop.

Trichomoniasis causes lesions in the throat of the infected bird which makes it progressively harder for the bird to swallow its food, and eventually to breathe. The infected bird will eventually die of starvation or possibly choking.

MoldHistoplasmosis is probably the most common and dreaded disease associated with pigeons and their caretakers. Histoplasmosis is a fungal lung disease that can be transmitted from pigeons and other birds to humans via dust and dander. Under damp and humid conditions in some parts of the country, mold can grow in an aviary. The mold mixes with dirt and dander. When the feather dander and dust are disturbed and fly in the air, the mold can be inhaled and lodged in the lungs, where it can multiply if not caught and treated. The dove worker can take the following steps to avoid infection:(1) A loft off the ground with a cement foundation is easier to clean and is not likely to create such moldy conditions. (2) The pigeon loft or house should include plenty of windows for air cireculation.(3) Water should be given to the pigeons outside the loft or house to prevent humidity. (4) The dove worker should spray a light mist of water on the dirt before stirring the dust and dander. (5) The dove worker should wear work cloths and a dust mask when cleaning the aviary. Those clothes should be washed separately. (6) The dove worker should inspect and clean the loft regularly, at least once a month. Dander should be kept to a minimum during molting season in the fall. Flying the birds at this time is a good way to keep feather dander to a minimum and keep the birds in top shape! (7) Keep the flock to a manageable size to prevent overcrowding and disease.(8) The birds should take regular baths to get rid of the dust and dander. Two baths a week is sufficient. The birds will stay healthy and look as white as snow! Bacterial DiseasesChlamydia and Salmonella can also be transmitted from birds to humans. Here common sense applies: The dove worker should disinfect the aviary regularly and wash his or her hands after handling the birds to wash off the bacteria.Viral DiseasesAlthough rare, birds can transmit influenza to humans. This disease usually starts with wild ducks or geese and spreads to domestic birds and then to humans. It is belived that the deadly Spanish flu of 1918 spread this way, resulting in millions of deaths worldwide. It disappeared as mysteriously as it came. Here again, common sense prevails. The dove worker should grandually introduce new birds into the flock. The dove worker should have a holding loft, where sick birds and new birds can be quarantined and treated until they are free of disease. The dove worker should also keep the aviary clean. Disinfectant sprays or bleach solutions can be used to kill most of viruses.

External ParasitesLike most birds, pigeon can be host to vector, including pigeon fleas, flies, mites, and lice. The dove worker should put a container with water outside the aviary for the birds to bathe once of twice a week , which will keep the birds clean and wash off any vectors and their eggs. The dove worker should regularly inspect and clean the aviary at least once a month to keep these external parasites under control. Click this link for an excellent article about keeping your aviary and birds free of external paraistes.Internal Parasites and DiseasesHoming pigeons can carry various internal parasites, including worms, which can be treated with medicine. Oropharma provides useful information about common pigeon diseases and their treatment.Bottom LineLike most animals and birds, pigeons can carry disease. The best way to keep them healthy is to keep the aviary, food, and water clean and disinfected. The dove worker should have a medicine chest readily available in case the birds get sick. It's good for you, and it's good for the birds.
